the other cases abovementioned it may happen to the one
and the same operation it may what is sure to happen is to be both
productive of both these effects at once. 1. In all cases
If compensation be the end in view So far as concerns pecuniary compensation, by whatsoever
is done for the purpose of compensation, the effect of pecuniary
punishment is produced at the same time likewise.
Not only so but sum for sum, not the sum being in both cases the same by what is taken
from a sum for the purpose of compensation, more
suffering will in general produced than by if it were
taken from him for the mere purpose of punishment.
Taken from him for the mere purpose of punishment it
would be put into a some bucket, commonly that of
the public, other than that of the party injured. But
if that of the party part injured f be the pocket into
which it is poured, hear here we see may be seen a species of
suffering over and above that which is produced in the other
suffering, viz. regret at the produced by the idea of the
enjoyment advantage not only reaped by an his adversary, and may but
reaped at his own expence.
