Punishment analysed into its various possible Modes.
Physical kind may be made either, 1. To his body itself by impeding the exertion of his active powers; or 2. To circumjacent
bodies only, by disposing them to resist the exertion of those powers.
Now But applications made to a man's body itself, besides
any restraint which they may produce, produce likewise
that sort of punishment to which we have given the name of passive: so that therefore they may be referred.
We come now to punishments of the active class. These consist in the being obliged to act. In what way? In any way, so as the party is but obliged. For the bare circumstance of being
obliged is enough at one time or other to convert even a pleasurable practice, in short any practice whatsoever, howsoever
pleasurable into a painful one. This depends partly upon the nature of the senses, partly upon a process of the Imagination
which it is not our business at present to develop. There may therefore be as many kinds of active punishments as there are ways of acting. This Class of Punishments, therefore, it
