the place that is left open to him, and includes in it the place
of his abode: his Punishment is called Banishment. If the
place a man is excluded from is not so extensive as the place that
is left open to him, and does not include in it the place of his
abode, neither of the above names will appear to express the case.
As if a man whose abode is in London be forbidden to go or to
reside in York but left free to go or be wherever else he pleases,
his this punishment could not well be called Banishment;
he being still permitted to reside in London the place of abode;
as well as to go any where else except to York. It would
seem no small violence done to language to call it Quasi-Imprisonment;
since in that case the Scene of his Imprisonment
is no less than the whole surface of the globe that
small plot only excepted in which the City of York is situated.
The truth is I can find no single word in the Language
that has been used to express this mode of confinement.
Nor do I know what name to make for it unless
some such name as Servitorial Exclusion or Local-Interdiction Loco-Interdiction
be admitted.
As to Banishment it will be proper in this place to
