Simple modes of Punishment
Restrictive
Restrictive Stocks
the sufferer's leg is applied the lower part of the
sufferer's leg; and then another similar band in
a similar direction with a correspondent notch
in it's lower edge is let down and over the leg
and fasten'd to the former. The two semicircular
notches being thus applied to one & another at their diameter
form one circle circular hole; within which the leg is confined.
The enlargement of the leg towards the foot
prevents it's being drawn one way; and that
towards the calf for the other. The hole To
prevent a mans being hurt the hole is always considerably
bigger than the limb is at in the part at
which it is let in. The man is set up on a chair
or bench with one or both of his legs in this attitude. This In
being the case this situation he may, if he pleases, rest his leg
upon the under board: but then it is his own [voluntary]
act, nor is it in general necessary, especially if he is provided
as he may be with a support for his foot on the
outside. These discussions will I doubt
appear but trifling. I insert them only for the
sake of illustrating and justifying the arrangement
here adopted against the objections to which
at first sight it might seem obnoxious might appear specious at first sight.
Partial restraint however, although it be in the
case above instanced, is in general not easily producible
without some degree of positive pain.
The punishments by which it is produced in is therefore
seldom simple in their its effects.
