Simple modes of Punishment
Restrictive

affected. Of the different species of corporal restraints
that are merely partial, the possible variety that can
be take from the differences in the part affected
is not great. The only parts which can
be separately confined are those which are
endowed with separate motions. Of those which
are endowed with any considerable degree of
separate motion the number is not great. They
are only 4. 1st ⊞ 2n the tongue. 2 the lower Jaws. 3. The whole head.
4dly The arms. 5th the Legs.

The confinement of the under Jaw by a spike fixed in
the inside of the mouth between that and the
upper Jaw is a punishment in use. It is
what is called Gagging.

The whole head might be confined if there were
any use for such punishment by being tied
to a board applied flat-ways to the back.

The arms and legs are frequently subjected to
an imperfect degree of confinement by what instruments
are called Manacles; as are the legs are by what instruments
are called Fetters. By Manacles one hand
is so fastened to the other hand, and by Fetters
one foot leg to the other leg as that they can
not move but in concurrence. The This use these
applications instruments now in use are put to is not so much for
the sake of the uneasiness they create, as for the
sake of ensuring [the continuance of] the confinement
of the whole person.
