Simple Modes. From p.24
That which the exert over occasionally is that which
they derive from impulse. That which they exert
occasionally constantly is derived either from Attraction
or repulsion.
When an instrument acts by it's weight it acts
by a force derived from attraction: to wit the attraction
of gravity: when it acts by its clathe attraction
which sep the parts particles of all bodies that are contiguous
to the great mass of the earth have to the
center of the earth. When by it's elasticity it
acts by a force the comb it derives from the combined powers of attraction of cohesion & repulsion: the repulsion
wherein wh attraction which the particles of the instrument they have for
each other at certain distances: and the repulsion
they have for each other at nearer distances.
