Difference between real punishment and apparent.

It is also manifest that the greater number there are
of punishments with their offences to be learnt,
and the nicer the distinctions there are between
them, the less likely to be learnt is any one of them: and if
learnt, to be remembered. Hence results another
practical lesson, (not very precise indeed but yet
proper to be attended to) which is – Not to
multiply [such] distinctions for a small advantage.
