Analogy

the inconvenience disagreeableness of it should rise to such a
pitch is a notion that I must own sounds
I think, rather apocryphal. Be that as it may such But if it be true such
an application of water would I think at any rate be ineligible [can I think never be eligible]
for the purpose of punishment. and that owing I mean owing from it's want of exemplarity The real punishment suffering
(which is the expence) would on this
supposition be enormous: and the apparent [punishment suffering]
(which is what is to produce the good effect)
would upon the face of the description be next show as
to nothing: upon the face of the execution of a
(where an instance ever to occur of it's being executed)
it would hardly show for what it was.

Boiling to Plunging into boiling water would
answer the purpose very well in point of exemplarity.
Such a death would upon the face
of the description, be tremendous: at the same time
that in reality it would not be much more
afflictive than simple death, since however intense
the pain might be it would be over in
an instant. But the circumstance of the heat
would break in upon the analogy. That a man
who ruined has destroy'd a country by water should himself
be destroy'd by water, seems consonant enough
to the popular notions of what is called Equity.
