Analogy.

inflicted.

The only motives which could prompt a man to
committ perpetrate the crime in question are those
of animosity hatred and lucre: whereof of these animosity is
the only direct immediate direct and natural motive;
pe lucre being an coming in in such case only as a collateral and factitious
one. By Animosity, a man might be
prompted
as where a man should be prompted
to it by hatred to the country in general, arising
from party dissensions: or by hatred to some
individual whose person and or lands, seemed ex- might seem
particularly
exposed to suffer. Lucre, as in the case of a man
who might be hired by a foreign enemy. As to
hatred to a country in general it seems a pretty
go considerable stretch to suppose it at all probable
to say that any man should think of perpetrating
such a crime from such a principle: if such
a thing can were to happen, I must own I do not
see what should hinder the country from adopting
even such a means to guard itself from destruction.

Where private lucre resentment against an individual is the motive, let the punishment
of murder be remarkably less, for instance
simple death, the criminal will in the
case choose prefer the expedient of ordinary murder.

It be lucre whatever be the same, it will be
strange if he can not procure an equal sum
by murder, robbery or theft.[a] [a] To Ins: p.11 No 2.
