Dr Maclaine's Letters to Soame Jenyns. Letter 3.

true Revolution, that it be conformable with
the purer dictates and essential principlles of
"Natural Religion, and that it be not in contradiction
"to with the fundamental principles
"of human knowledge. Though it may
"natural right, it must not contradict it;...
"Without this method of proceeding, the work of
"God is neither uniform nor consistent; - Nature
"and Grace are in contrast and contradiction."

Objections drawn from the topic of decency are
confined to those punishments the effect of which
is to render those parts which it is
with decency to expose the objects of right, or subjects
of conversation.
Liberty.
Punishments of the restrictive class and of
the active are both opposed to Liberty. Punishments
of the restrictive kind are simply stated
infringements upon liberty; which say certain
persons is the natural indefeasible right of man.
Against Punishments of the active kind go still the reproach goes still
further: they are stigmatized under the name of
slavery. From this quarter come such abhorrences
as these. The liberty of an Englishman should be
