not conformable to that principle. If there be
any persons who are not disposed to accede to
this position, or it is not by argument that I
shall attempt to reconcile them to it. That would
be to fall into the error of
those more zealous than enlighten'd champions of
the faith, who can battle unbelievers with such
of scripture.
The effect of all these objections when laid together
is to reprobate almost every species of
punishment that can be imagined. There remains
only pecuniary punishment: and to make the
system of prejudice compleat I have found
a writer who upon the score of humanity
reprobatespasses [a general] censure even upon that.
As many men may object
As there are principles which dispose men
to disapprove of various punishments without
reason, so are there others which dispose to
disapprove of punishments without reason; that
is, without a view to their utility the question. For in
