The cases in which this effect takes place will all of
them be found to be of the number of these in
which the punishment is analogous bears an analogy to the
offence. The phrase bestowed were in use upon these occasions
to mark as an epithet of the approbation bestowed upon the
punishment as Equity equitable. The punishment is
said to be founded in commended for its Equity. As to This Equity
the foundation of it is at bottom nothing more than the propensity
which they put to pass from the idea of the
crime to that of the punishment on account
disposed by principles which they are not in a condition
to attend to & develop unfold.

It happens fortunately that the same punishment
which by the manner in which it acts
upon the imagination of the people is calculated
to acquire to their favour recommend itself, is calculated
[in the same case] to deserve it.

There are three ways as we have shown,
in which a punishment that is analogous to the offence
is on account by means of that very property alone is calculated
to do peculiar service. This tendency advantage
it derives from its analogy alone whatever
it may be in itself, and independently of any intrinsic
properties it may possess. By the same powers by
which it makes qualifies it to make an impression upon the people at
large who consider it as critics considered in quality of critics, it is qualified to
