All these fictitious entities not being kept in subordination
to the principle of utility are at war
with it.
Under the head of Humanity may be ranked
some of the most formidable powerful of all the prejudices that tend to
confuse and distract the judgment of the Statesman Legislator.
As the force of arguments taken from
this topic has chiefly in the words, it is impracticable difficult
to give any just account of them in
any other words than those in which they happen
to be conceived. ⊞ ⊞ Now as the words and cominations of words that are liable to be employ'd in this way are indefinitely various It is impracticable therefore to
give any general account of them at all that
shall be a just one. Thus much One character however they
seem to possess in common, which is the tendency
they have to conciliate pity for the sufferer.
For the purpose of detecting laying open the fallacy of these
arguments, that is their disconformity to the principle
of utility I shall take a few passages from
