To those who feel themselves unwilling to bestow
on Chymistry so extensive a signification,
the following distribution may be more acceptable.
The knowledge of those powers that are found in
all bodies might be termed General Physics:
of those that are to be found in particular bodies
only, Particular Physics: and the name
of Chymistry might be confined to that branch
of par Particular Physics which teaches the power
which particular bodies are made to exert by
virtue of Heat and Cold and mixture. In
A circumstance that renders the division not
strictly exact is that in the several ways in which
bodies may produce by those powers which
I have stiled Chymical, may produce that effect
before they produce any exterior change in the part that shall be sensible to an observer.
In this case
such case the powers I have stiled termed Mechanical
might still retain that name: those I have termed Chymicall might be stiled Specific; of
which whereof Chymical powers would in this
case form a [class] subordinate division.
