Simple afflictive Punishments.

of the uneasy kind: and, unless upon by the accident
accident of catching cold, it leaves behind it no
consequences whatsoever.

As to any other bodily evils which over and above
the organical pain which those other such additional evils
will be considered under the heads of the several
punishments that are respectively calculated to
produce them.

As to the infamy which persons hereunto
Besides the effects that have been mentioned
Punishments of this kind produce class subject a man a certain
degree of Infamy Ignominy: a certain quantity of that kind of pain which is grounded in a species from the Moral Sanction. All Punishment indeed
as exists when inflicted by the hand appointment of the Magistrate
tends in some degree to produce Infamy subject a man to Ignominy
by evidencing his having committed
the offence. But Corporal Punishments tend
contribute to the production of this effect on
a separate account: and these are Corporal
Punishments.
The proof is that the same applications
tend to produce it even when not
inflicted by the hand appointment of the Magistrate: even
when inflicted on an innocent man, by the
hand of a wrong-doer. The reason of their doing
so is not to the present purpose: nor is
it here our business the nature of Ignominy
itself a proper subject for our present immediate enquires at
present

we have considered the general nature of the
Moral Sanction; the source it being the source from whence that evil is derived. See Chap. ... These however have
