Simple afflictive Punishments.
Ins. – Ignominy
not any peculiar tendency to produce subject a
man to ignominy more than other corporal
punishments: for the ignominy is of the effect
of the organical pain. It is may indeed be the effect of indeed
in many cases of an operation by which organical pain is produced:
but it is the effect of the operation not of the pain:
on the contrary the slighter the pain the more
manifest in many cases is the infamy ignominy. Because the slighter the
pain is, the more manifest it is that it was not for
the sake of the pain but of some other effect the ignominy that the
operation application was prescribed: now this other effect can be
nothing but the ignominy.
