Simple afflictive Punishments examined
for instance be of a cane or whalebone: of such a
determined length for instance a yard, and of a regular figure cylindrical
or conical; the diameter of the base determined for
instance to have an inch. Let us a number
of such rods project as radii from an axis.
Let the machine be put in motion the body of the
patient being fastened under it: the force of each blow
will be determined by the number of turns it is made
to perform in a given time, suppose a minute:
the whole sum of the punishment will be determined
with as great much accuracy as the nature of things admitts
of by prescribing the number of minutes
during which the patient is to continue exposed
to the operation. The engine should be made to go
by weight in the manner of a Jock. If it should
be thought advisable to change the part exposed that
the whole effect of the operation may not be confined
to so narrow a spot as would be covered by the
rods, the block on which the patient was bound
might be so contrived as to be moveable backwards
and forwards within certain limits by pushing and
drawing with his hands which as far as was
necessary for that purpose might be left at liberty.

public view and to prevent any clandestine alteration in
