Simple afflictive Punishments examined.

This machine would be sufficient to produce every
effect that could be proposed from simple afflictive
Punishment: that of a those which result from the circumstance of analogy excepted: an unnecessary variety of engines for such a purpose penal engines
would at best be useless, and on account of the odium,
mischievous.

Simple afflictive Punishments are peculiarly eligible
on the score of exemplarity. Whatever the patient
suffers he may be seen to suffer. This is not the
case with pecuniary punishment. It is not the
case with even such corporation punishments as
are chronical; Far less continuing for a length space of time, greater than any person can find a motive
to continue a spectator. It is not the case with
Infamy. It is not Lease of all is it the case with Death; the penal
consequences of which in as far as they consist
of the privation of the pleasures which the offender
if living might have enjoy'd are far out
of the reach of human kin.

On the score of subserviency to reformation they
stand upon its footing with all other punishments.
one species of them alone which stands naturally being of the diacritic kind, will
connected with be considered under the article of imprisonment which is stands
naturally connected. Of all other punishments the
subserviency to reformation is as the such experienced magnitude.

With regard to simplicity of description, analogy, and
popularity nothing and in particular need be observed
under this head of punishment: for the reasons have been
already mentioned.
