Discolourment and Disfigurement
up the whole assemblage of the different kinds and
lots of pain or other evil which the several
punishments in question will be sure in any queer are of a nature for a
certainty instance to produce. We cannot even
hope to draw a circle round them narrower
than that vague and universal one which includes
all kinds of evil whatsoever. Now This universality
in the effects of every one, obliterates in
a great degree the distinction between the effects
of that and then of another: [...] are not very
of any one of them that it can not be means
of producing may so that, Taking into consideration the
effects produced by any one of them, we
can not say but that the same effects might
be produced by any other. The utmost we can
say is that of those effects there are some, which
such or such a mode of punishment is certain to
produce while that such another punishment has only a
chance more or less remote of producing the same
effects: others, which though there be no absolute
certainty in the case; one of those punishments
has a greater chance of producing than another
has.
