Discolourment and Disfigurement

In Poland the symbolical method of [...]
expression is added to the liberal: the initial
letter of the Crime is enclosed in the figure
of a Gallows. In Kurdistan among
the Gentoos a very whimsical kind of symbol
is made use of as a stigma.[a]

In France those who are sentenced to the punishment
of the Galleys are so stigmatized with
the letters G.A.Z.†Code Penal p.138. In some cases part of the punishment
for Theft is to be stigmatized with the
letter V being the first letter of the word Vol:
for a second offence, with two V's.IIII Ibid. p.104, 105.
