an ordinary sized man is fixed perpendicularly
upon a stage. In the middle is made a semicircular
notch to receive the neck of the patient
on each side of which is a semicircular
notch to receive the hands. The Patient standing in this manner with his neck and hands, and each resting upon the respective notches Upon this board
another is let down which has three other semicicular
notches corresponding to those on the lower board in
such manner as to form so many circular
notches ones in which the respective members remain
inclosed. The Pillory, as is well known,
is used with us in England.

Halseisen. Neck-Iron I. 216 The Carcan The Carcan is a board with holes in it, into
which the neck and hands are inserted much
in the same manner as the Pillory. The
position of it however is horizontal; and it is not
fixed to any thing, so that the patient is not
deprived of the faculty of loco-motion, but
carries it about with him as he walks. The
Carcan as well as the Pillory is used in France.

The StocksThe Stocks are an instrument made in the
same manner as the Pillory, except that the
it has but two holes which are lower than those in the
others, and made to receive the Legs instead
of the Neck and Hands. The instrument being
fixed to the ground, the whole body is at the
same time disabled with respect to the faculty
of loco-motion. The Stocks are in use in
England. In the Country one sees an implement of
