Mutilation.

Law: †v. Brach. Lib. de Coronã but they have now been all of them out of
use for so many centuries, that upon that ground
it is not to be imagined any of them would be
deemed at this time of day to be in force.

Amputation of the hand is in force in two cases
by in virtue of as many [a] Statutes: but I know of no instance where
of it's of being put into practise.

What in other
Countries.

It is a mode of punishment not much used
in any European nation. In Hindostan, under
the Gentoo Law, limbs are lopt oft on the
most trifling occasions.II II Gentoo Code.

Mea By what
means it may be
performed.

As to the means of inflicting this punishment
the most obvious and least afflictive is that of amputation, or as in
the case of the eye it would be called excision,
performed with a sharp instrument. It might be
executed by corrosives, by pro or by [a variety
of] other methods still less obvious which have been
already mentioned on the occasion of other Corporal
Punishments, and which it would answer no purpose to discuss anew.

and Cray-fish are known to renew their claws, which
is probably the case with other fish of the testaceous
tribe.
