Branding is a punishment common in common use in
China. "All convicted species are in ordinary cases
"branded with appropriate characters, as a warning to
" others and a reproach to themselves, the impression of
"which it is equally necessary to preserve undefaced, whether
"the offenders are permitted to return to their districts
"immediately after receiving a corporal punishment
"condemned to undergo perpetual banishment or exile
"perpetually. Therefore when guilting of effacing the characters
"so far as to render them illegible, they shall be punished
"with 60 blows & the characters shall be branded anew."
Staunton's Penal Code of China pp. 301, 2.
For the same work (p.278) it appears that the offender of
which is branded or marked with the name of the offence
of which he has been convicted.
