2 Disfigurement with other species of deformation,
is like discolourment distinguishable into
transient & permanent. It may be performed
by disfigurement of the person itself, or of the
person by means of some dress.
That which is produced by dress is not
disfigurement properly so called: but by a
natural association of ideas it has the same effect.
To this head may be referred the frightful garbs
with which delinquents of certain classes were wont
to be clad who were sentenced by the inquisition.
Some with the representation of flames
upon them, others with that of Devils: images
or emblems of sufferings to come.
Shaving off the hair was among the punishments
formerly in use in France: it was a
part of the punishment inflicted on a woman
for adultery. Among the Gentou Gentoo inhabitants of
Hindoostan it is the punishment of a Bramin who kills another man. The Bramins
are their Priests The Bramins are their Priests.
By the Noblemen men of rank & leisure in
China long nails are regarded as a mark
of distinction; to reduce them to a
length would be a disfigurement. So would
the cutting off the beard in Russia if performed
on a peasant or country gentleman. So it
would in England if performed upon certain Jews.
The several modes of disfi several permanent modes
of disfigurement come within a very
narrow compass: The only two modes that
have been practised in England in virtue of
the common law are slitting the nose and
slitting or cutting off the ear: the former in
no instance I believe within the present century:
the latter not in many. In Pope and the
other authors contemporary with him may be seen
what pregnant occasion is it afforded for the gratification
