might be applied to the use of those who are blind as well
as deaf and dumb: to wit either by being varied
in such manner that the letters shall be expressed
by the hands of both parties: or more simply, by
the speaker's presenting his hands to the hearer to be felt instead
of being seen, the remaining

The common finger language is however of use to
those only who before they came to have need of
this mute language it were acquainted with the
use of letters: for letters only are the things that
it represents; and ideas only inasmuch as they are expressed
by letters.

The quantity of evil produced by these several modes
of disablement depends upon a variety of contingencies.
