might disable a Sailor as such; though the might
well be fit for some of the services on board
ship.

It is not the loss of one hand that will disable a
Porter of a Chairman. I have seen several
men act in those employments who wanted each
a hand.

The loss of support The loss of any large joint of either of the extremities is enough to disable a man
from the common employments of a general
husbandman. If he has lost a foot He cannot follow the plough.
The loss of one hand is enough to him If he has lost a hand he cannot thresh, and
from threshing. he can do very little towards
loading or unloading of a cart.

The loss of a foot or a leg or even of both
legs will affect a man very little in any of
those employments that have obtained the
name of sedentary. Nothing at all in any of
the three liberal professions. Nothing at all in
many of the manufacturing occupations.

I question whether there be any manufacturing occupation
or indeed any man manual occupation whatever
for which a man may be disabled by the loss
of a single joint of the hand or even of a single finger.

Music is the great pleasure and occupation of the
blind. Blindness would be a much severer punishment
upon those who have not a relish an ear for music
than upon those who have.
