Disablement – Evils

Loss of tongue could in those professions in which
reward follows viz proportioned to keeps pace with service would debar a man from
exercising his profession and thereby deprive him
of the his livelyhood. Loss of tongue would effectively disable
a Counsellor from acting as an Advocate: but it
would not at all disable him from acting as a
Drawer of pleadings or a Conveyancer. F It
would disable a man from acting as an Attorney
because that branch of the business can not be carried on without
by disabling him from current conversation. Loss of
hearing would have the same effects. Loss of eyes
would not absolutely disable a Counsellor from acting as an
Advocate if he had already laid in his stock of knowledge:
but it would render it very difficult for him
to act in either of the other capacities. It would
pretty effectually disable him a man from carrying on the
business of an Attorney. Loss of any of those organs senses
would disable a man pretty effectually from acting
as a Physician: for in enquiring the condition the collecting information which
the medical adviser collects respecting the condition generally
of a sick patient, the medical advice has occasion
for all his senses to
would generally be imperfect, unless he calls in the evidence
of all his senses. Loss of any of these tongue
would disable a Divine altogether from the exercise of the
duties of his function: Loss of sight or hearing or would
render it difficult to him to go through all his
duties with decency, according to the forms practise of most
persuasions.
