Imprisonment its three purposes

those who have money to purchase them, that many a prisoner
desires becomes in time to be tolerably well reconciled to his
situation. When this is the case the Imprisonment can
no longer be of use in any view.

3. The severer it is I mean all along on point of intensity,
the less of it in point of magnitude will be
consumed upon the whole; that is in point of intensity
and duration taken together: the more favourable in
short will it be to the sufferer: it will produce its effect at a cheaper more frugal
rate. The quantity of suffering painful sensations which in under the case
of the milder imprisonment is diffused and dissipated through a
large portion mass of sensations indifferent or pleasurable,
being in the severer imprisonment brought together,
will act with collected force & produce a stronger impression. The same quantity
of pain will therefore go farther in this way
than in the other. Add to this that the same quantity
of suffering in this way will not have so bad pernicious
influence on the happiness condition of his future life. In the
course of a long-protracted tedious confinement, his means habits
of industry are weaken'd, his business runs into another
channel, & many of those casual opportunities
which if laid hold on effect liberty he might embraced might have been given the means
