in The degree of severity of this privation varies greatly and This incon
according to the differences of Age, Sex, Habit, &
Constitution. To some t is a heavy punishment:
to others not none at all: and the misfortune is
that these differences are not discoverable by any
outward signs: much less are they capable of being
graduated & described.
The 7th is peculiar to such as understand know how to use the
implements in question: and with respect to such
as do it is not very [far from being] equable. I Upon a man writer by
letters profession it would have the effect of depriving him
of his livelyhood: and with respect to other men the
severity of it would be apt to vary very considerably
fro the occasions they may have to write up in the way
of business and the amusement they may satisfaction they may take in it
in the way of mere amusement. The bulk of the
people not being susceptible of it this alone being
a sufficient reason for rejecting it on the score of
punishment. For why should a man be punished
the more for being a scholar? especially considering
that his sensibility to punishment in general being
encreased by education the any other remainder rest of his the punishment
whatever it may be, to which [he may be subjected to at the same time by the same sentence] will
go produce more pain in him than in one who would whose
ignorance rendered him unsusceptible not be susceptible of this.
