the exclusion of fresh air. This gives rise to those hardships
which being palpably foreign to the design od
Imprisonment have been ranked under the both
head of abuses. In consideration of these Abuses
Mr Howard has with perfect justice utterly reprobated
the use of Dungeons. Those therefore who
may have considered the use of Dungeons or other other apartments
contrived constructed in such a manner as to exclude
the air as being the only means of excluding
the light may be apt to look upon the
circumstance of darkness as being deservedly thrown
out of the catalogue of eligible punishments. But this
upon a little reflection consideration will appear not to be the
case. The light may be entirely excluded without
any diminution of the supply of Air.
Now the circumstance of the want of light is the
most striking circumstance in the eyes of the
generality of men annexed included to the idea of a Dungeon. The exclusion of a Supply of fresh Air
and the mischief that result from it are circumstances consequences
that are not apt to strike any but what those
who have some acquaintance with tincture of Natural Philosophy.
⊞ ⊞ At the same time it is observed very well understood in general that great hardships are the lot of those whose air confinement is in a Dungeon. Hence Mean time But the word Dungeon is become a formidable
one; and well calculated to answer the purpose of
Exemplarity. It will be of use therefore that it should
be retained; and it may be employ'd to signify any
apartment
