Laborious Punishment – Eden
When the Laborious Punishment of hard labour is pitched
upon for the species of punishment, the it then becomes
an object of consideration what kind of labour
to adopt: what kind of work employment use the labour the delinquent shall be
put to. Several mo
Several modes of employment have been suggested
in this view by the Author of the Principles of Penal
Law.
1st Working in "the Dock Yards, Stannaries, Saltworks,
"mines and public buildings of the Kingdom.
2. The being sent to Tunis, Algiers, and other
Mahometan ports, for the redemption of Christian
Slaves. This for "the more enormous offenders."
3. Thirdly the being "compelled to dangerous expeditions":
meaning I suppose warlike expeditions
4. The being sent to establish new colonies, factories
and settlements on the coasts of Africa, &
on small islands for the benefit of navigation.
On each of these proposals I will make a few remarks.
The 1st is the setting them to work in the
Dock Yards, Stannaries, Saltworks, mines, and
public buildings of the Kingdom. As to Against so much
of this proposal as concerns the Dock Yards and
the Public Buildings, I can see no objection. It
is no more than putting them to the ordinary employment
of Day-labourers. As to so much of it as
