Afflictive Tormenting Deaths. Simple modes of Punishment.

This punishment varies greatly in point of severity
according as the sufferer is or is not indulged
with what is called the coup de grace. If no
coup de grace is given the immediate cause
of death must be the fever. The coup de grace
is a blow given on the breast bone. This
blow, if the breast bone force of it be such as
[besides breaking of the breast bone] to affect the
heart, in such manner as to put a stop to the action of that organ or to bruise the lungs in such manner
as to put a stop to respiration, is fatal instantly:
but instances have been known to happen when
although the breast-bone has been broken, neither of
those two effects have taken place, so that the patient
has been left to die of the fever in the
same manner as if no coup de grace had been
given him.

Precipitation is a punishment that was in use
among the antient Greeks and Romans. This was Among
a punishment very uncertain the citizens delinquents were precipitated down a dungeon
with spikes at bottom: among the latter sometimes down a dungeon
sometimes down the Tarpeian. This was a punishment
very uncertain as to the mode of its operation.

The immediate cause of death might be
either the effusion of blood, or the fever, or perhaps
if the precipice was very high indeed, the stop put
to respiration.
