Simple modes of Punishment.
30,000 of the latter. Here there are 180,000 persons
kept in a state way of life that upon the whole appears
to be worse than death, that is such in which
the sum amount of the sufferings exceeds that of the enjoyments.
And this is for the sake of keeping
30,000 persons in a way of life not remarkably
better more happy than that which upon an average
the same number of persons would be in where
there was no slavery. On the contrary it is found
that men in general are freed where they have opportunity
of changing that scene for this. On the other hand
I think it is not to be disputed but that the
Sugar Rum and other delicacies which are the
growth culture of these islands add considerably to the enjoyments
of the people here in Europe. All this
I consider: yet at the same time rather than that
two such executions should happen in a year, or
even without any such executions, that 180,000 men
persons should be kept in a state in which they
could not be kept but by the apprehension of such
executions, I would wish⊞ ⊞ out of pure affection, [to see the inhabitants islands
swallow'd up with every thing that inhabits them all their inhabitants,]
to know that the islands with all their inhabitants
were at the bottom of the Sea. I have often tho revolved
this wish: but upon the coolest calculation I
have ever been able to make, I could never persuade
myself to retract it.
