In like manner does will the mind of men often learn
to accommodate itself to situations which at first
prospect appeared intolerable. Temporary alleviations
of pain are by the contrast converted into pleasures.
When the old sources of enjoyment are found
to be irrecoverably dry, the mind begins insensibly withdraws
itself, from them, and comes learns at length to strike out new

Variability is a point of excellencein which the punishment

the mischief of each crime and the quantity of its punishment, and crimes be
of different degrees of malignity, how many so ever sorts of crimes so ever there are dest rising one above another in
this respect, the punishment of death can although if competent
on other accounts, can on this account be
competent
