Of Subsidiary Punishments.

With regard to such punishments as that depend upon
the will, abou such of them as I are [of the[ chronical
[kind] must have a subsidiary punishment of some
kind or other as a subsidiary punishment to attend
upon them throughout the whole course of their continuance.

Punishments which are always chronical are Imprisonment,
Quasi-Imprisonment and Banishment.
Restraints on occupations may also be ranked among are most commonly of a
chronical Punishments nature; though a considerable
inconvenience may be imposed degree of punishment may be inflicted upon a man by laying
a man him under such or such a restraint upon such and
such a particular occasion for an indefinitely small
period of time.

[Active] punishments of the active class may be either
one
measured out either by the result of the labour,
or the time of its continuance: in other words a man may be set to work either by at task-work or by time. It is in the last
case only that they can be termed strictly chronical.
The last mode is that which is most commonly practised in use.
The reason cause of this is, that i active punishment is
most commonly coupled with Imprisonment or Confinement.
The reason of this is, that the tasks attached are must in order to amount to any useful degree of punishment by such as cannot be performed under a considerable length of time: and Imprisonment or Confinement
are being means of keeping the delinquent forthcoming
ready to suffer the attendant subsidiary punishment
as often as a failure in the punishment first-designed
shall be incurred during the continuance of the term [be incurred].
