Simple afflictive Punishment
physical powers: those of the other, Physical, Physiological.
Physical powers may be again distinguished
into Mechanical and Chymical.
By Mechanical powers I mean such as
all bodies exert on all bodies [and in all occasions]
in virtue of the properties property of impenetrability
[and figure] and of the forces of attraction of Gravity,
Attraction of Cohesion, Elasticity, (which might
perhaps be termed Repulsion of Cohesion) and Impulse.[a] [a] To Inf. 1 No I It is in virtue of these powers, that a
stick, for example, or a knife, or a stretched cord
may be made to produce in the human body an external impression
which is accompanied with pain.
By Chymical Powers I mean such as
only particular bodies exert on particular bodies,
but that whether either of them be indeed
or not with vital organization: to wit in virtue
of the properties of Heating and Cooling, the forces of Elective Attraction, Attraction of
Mag Electricity, Attraction of Magnetism, Optical
refraction, and the like. It is in virtue of this
class of powers that wood any subs any inflammable substance
when kindled [and applied] near the body⊞ ⊞ water or any other fluid or any solid substance when applied to the body in a certain degree of heat, or
any of the fluid removal corrosive acids,[b] [b] To Inf. 1. No. III, for example, when
applied to the body⊞ ⊞ in any degree of heat, may be made to produce such a change
in the texture of the part, as is accompanied with
