CRIT. JUR. CRIM.

Among the principal of these acts, which God is thus supposed
to hate [are the several offences (crimes)] is the
crime of not believing being able to believe certain facts, which the truth of which those zealots
are so happy as to find see announce in certain
books, in which others equally disposed to believe
every thing to be true whether in these books announce is declared
nor to be so. not so happy as to see announced there.
It were something if they pretended to find likewise
that God has commanded these truths such beliefs to be believed
but this is what they never so much as imagined
to be necessary. God has said never commanded any such thing:
It were more still however they apply themselves to the study of
those books, they have found discovered those facts
to be true: in the same way that were they to go
on discovering they might daily discover more
and more. Who shall set the limits? What
shall hinder them from discovering more and
more? from adding more and more to the catalogue
of unbelievers? Who shall see to the end of these discoveries
of which every [first] instance makes a
fresh addition to the catalogue of unbelievers, to the
wickedness of those ..... to the wrath of these
good men, and to the discord and unhappiness
of the society?

It were more still if they pretended that the belief
of these truths whether commanded by God or no
addu was of a nature to add any thing to the happiness,
or the disbelief of them to the unhappiness
of society. But nothing can be further from their
thoughts
