other such things, may be understood from the Sacred rites

severe denunciations, unless they had a firm Assurance,
that Death was not an utter destruction sweeping every
thing, as it were, away, but a kind of migration and —
Change of life, that used to lead famous men and
women up to heaven but to keep others within the
Earth and yet preserve their existence. According to
this Opinion our own Romulus lives in heaven with
the Gods, as Ennius says agreeable to the popular ——
Opinion; and Hercules, who was for some time with
the Greeks, and afterwards with us and in many
other places, as far as the Ocean, is reckoned a great
and propitious Deity. Hence Bacchus is a God,
who was born of Semele; and the Brothers sons of
Tyndarus are equally famous, not only for having
assisted the Romans in their Battles, but even for
having been the messengers of good Tidings. is not Ino
the Daughter of Cadmus, called Leucothea by the
Greeks, and Matuta by us? without giving any more
particular Examples, is not heaven almost filled
with a race of Mortals? but if I was to Search the
Writings of the Antients and particularly the Greeks,
