did our Philosophers in those very Books of theirs in which
they inforce the Contempt of human Glory, set their own
names to them. therefore, if the general consent of men is
the voice of nature, and all whatsoever. Imagine something
to pertain to those who have departed the life; the same
should also be our Opinion, and if we think that they whose
minds excell in understanding or virtue, because they
are Men of the greatest parts, can discern the Operations
of nature best: it is probable, when any excellent man
does an Eminent Service to Posterity, that there is ——
something that he can have a sense of, after his Death;
but we are naturally given to think that there are Gods and
by our reason can form a Judgment of what they are; so by
the General consent of all Nations we are persuaded that
our Souls exist after Death: whither they go, and what
they are, we must find out by Reason; the being ignorant
of this, has caused men to invent and believe those Fables
of Hell and all its dreadful punishments, which you
seem to dispise with so much reason; for the imagined
that as the Bodies of Men were put under Ground, and
covered with Earth, from whence is derived the Latin word,
(humari) they passed all their time under Ground, this
opinion of theirs has occasioned many Errors; which the
Poets have increased; for often a large Assembly in the
Theatre with women and Children amongst them, is
astonished with such pompous poetry as this: "here I
