(as well as a great many other things tho' this we cannot in
the least, for Mathematicians have demonstrated it) that
the Earth being placed in the middle is as it were a point
in respect to the whole System, which they call, κεντρον,
(the Centre): and that the nature of the four original —
bodies, from which every thing was produced, was such,
that they had the Causes of motion, as it were, divided and
allotted amongst them: that Earthy and moist particles,
by their own weight and inclination, were carried to the Sea
and to the land in right Angles; the two remaining parts,
the one igneous, the other animal; (as the former which —
were at first the highest by their Gravity and weight sunk
to the Middle) so these ascended towards the Heavens
upwards in the right lines, whether naturally ascending, or
driven up by the heavy bodies as being lightest: these
things being proved, it is clear that the particles which
as animal, that is fit for respiration, or igneous should
ascend: but if the Soul is a certain number (which is
supported to be sure with more Art than Foundation)
or that 5th kind of Nature, which one may more easily
conceive than express: they are also much more pure and
perfect, so as to carry themselves a great way from the
Earth. some one of these then must be the Soul, unless
that which is of such a lively and active nature, rests
sunk in the heart or brain or the blood, according to ——
Empedocles. but as for Dicaearchus and his fellow
