from whence that series of reasoning of Plato's had its rise;
which was explained from Socrates in Phaedrus, and ——
inserted by me in my 6th Book of the Republick. "That
"which is always moved, is eternal: what gives motion to
"any thing, and is itself moved from some other cause,
"when its Motion ceases, must necessarily be annihilated.
"that alone therefore which moves itself, never ceases to
"move, because it can never be forsake. moreover this
"is the Fountain head and principle of Motion to the
"rest. moreover their is no Origin of a principle; for
"from a principle all things are produced; but it cannot
"be produced from any thing; for if it is, then it is no
"principle, which, if it has had no beginning, will
"have no End; for an extinct principle neither is revived
"from any thing else; nor produces any thing else; since
"all things must arise from a Principle: therefore the
"principle of Motion is, that which is moved of itself. —
"moreover it can neither be born nor die: let even the
"whole heaven and Earth fall, it must necessarily remain
"untouched, nor yet can it acquire any new force, by —
"which it may be acted upon. it being plain, therefore,
"that that which moves itself is Eternal: who can
"deny that the Soul partakes of that Nature? for every
"thing that is acted upon by an outward force, is
"inanimate, but what is Animate is moved by its own
"internal force; for this is the nature and power peculiar
