where glittering with stars; and the Earth standing out of the
water which is fixed in the middle of the whole world, habitable
and Cultivated in two distant continents, one of which, that
we inhabit, is situated under the pole, under the seven
Stars, whence the chilling North wind congeals the gelid —
Snow, the other Southern, unknown to us, which the Greeks
call Αντιγονα; the rest uncultivated, on account of their being
frozen with the Cold, or burnt up with the heat; but where
we inhabit, does not miss in its time "of having the heaven
shine, the trees covered with leaves, the, the boughs of the vines"
"bending down beneath the weight of their fruit, the green"
"corn ripened, in short every green thing flourishing, the"
"fountains playing, and the meads covered with herbs;" besides
the Multitude of cattle, which are used partly for food, partly
for draught, partly for manuring the Ground, and partly
for Cloathing: and man himself, for the improving of those
things, and the worshipping the Gods; and all the fields
and waters contributing to his benefit: when we consider
all these things, and others which are innumerable, I say;
can we doubt but that there is some one who created them
presides over them (if these things were created as Plato
thinks) or (if they always existed, as Aristotle imagines)
a moderator and governor of such a vast fabrick? thus,
although we cannot see the soul of Man, nor yet God, yet
as you acknowledge a God from his Works, so from its
faculties of memory and invention, and the celerity of
its motion, and the beauty of its virtue you should ——
