Imagining you may by this time be fixed at Weymouth
after finishing your business in Hampshire & Devonshire, & being obliged
to make this day a day of rest by the rain which has fallen
for the first time since we began our journey except a shower at
Oxford, I will take the opportunity to make you the most grateful
acknowledgements in behalf of myself & my fellow traveller, for your
kindness in obtaining the letter of recommendation from Mr Browne
and to acquaint you of our safe arrival at this place. our journey has
been very delightful & our feet & forces have held out hitherto extremely
well: I mean our bodily forces: as for those of the pocket XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

but in the mean time I was so happy as to find Fr & Mrs
Bentham at home & Mrs Bentham was so kind as to give me a
letter of recommendation to Mrs Roberts wife of Dr Roberts Physician
at Ross in Herefordshire, which tho' unfortunately Mrs Roberts was
gone to Bath, proved of infinite service to us, as it introduced us to
the Dr who is an excellent Naturalist and Antiquarian, & whose
candour and civility to us was equal to his learning. I met with a
very cordial & polite reception from the fellowswith whom we dined in the hall & rec'd my Exhibition
from Mr Jefferson tho' not till after several deductions which left
me but 15£ .1.8 at 1/2 after 4 we left Friar Bacon's study in our
