Accordingly I went with Mr Marsh to the surveyors private
office and he came out sent him out // to me; I shew'd him my drawing
which he looked dlightly over without reading any of the
references, he and said it was done very pretty, but
shook his head and said that the Board had determined
to have nothing to do with mine, but had ordered the old
pumps with all it with some few alterations to be fitted -
(I pressed him to tell me what they were which he at length did.) namely none) on board all the Ships, he said 'twas true that Coke
had some Scheme of altering his my pump (namely in my manner)
but that he did not think that it would ever come to
any thing. I asked him what objections they had to mine.
he told me they thought the links would stretch, I
replyied that I had overhaled all the old Chain in the
Storehouse and or elsewhere at Woolwich and that out
of so much I could find but one link that had
stretched and that that was but ¼ of an Inch Diameter thick
