The following is a copy of a Letter from the Secretary to
The Commissioners of his Majesty's Navy, to S.B. (then
but fifteen years of Age) on account of some Improvements
he had made to the Chain-Pump of which he had
exhibited a Model to the Commissioners; having
before at their request, given them a drawing which
he made himself.

The Commissioners of the Navy have received —
your Letter of the 25th past, relative to your improved
Chain-Pumps, and have Commanded me to acquaint
you, that tho' they admit the Improvements and
commend your Ingenuity, The Pump invented by
Mr Cole, which has been lately try'd, being
superior to yours, They cannot order a Tryal
of your invention, I am

The following is a Copy of An Extract of a Letter from
S.B. dated Chatham Dock Yard June 12 1774
relative to the above.
Tuesday morning. We Shipwrights passed through the
Commissioners Office here; One by One, as the Clerk of the
Cheque called over our Names Lord Sandwich being present Mr Marsh, (The Commissioner
from the Navy Office London ) & Sir John Williams the
Surveyor of the Navy (from ) did me the honour of a Bow
