So that you see, among ourselves, we make no less than four
different families which serve us & our young Folkes to visit
interchangeably by which means as you may imagine, our
time is diversified, & is never an Incumbrance to us, upon
I don't know where else it was possible for us, to be more
agreably settled, if so much so, especially for the purpose of our
coming; [The Country about Caen is very much like Northamptonshire
& the Buildings in it are preferable to those of Rouen,
they have plenty of Stone, & like the Town of Northampton, by digging
Cellars they easily supply themselves with Stone for the Superstructures
but there is one great Inconvenience to us who have been used
to wood Floors, & Carpets upon them, that the Houses hereabout
universally have their Floors of Stone, ours are of that sort,
even the Chambers & Dining Room, tho' handsomely furnished

from here must go to Paris to get to Calais wch is near 150
out of the way, wch makes it both tedious & Expensive]

I depended upon, to sett off against the Demand upon me for a year & half
arrears of Rent, for wch Joyce her had brought an Action against
me just before I left England. It seems Mr Buller who Mr Brown
upon it gave his opinion that I ought to have brought up my Action
Mrs Farmer, & that now she is dead I am remedy less, for my
I never knew an Instance before of a wrong without a remedy
but as the case is so, I must Submit & have then to Mr
Brown, to desire he will get attorney to stay till I return
wch will be before next Term, or if he will act to apply to Mr
Barrett for money to pay Debt & Cash wch will amount to near
£60 Pounds, & will be so much more out of my Pocket than
I expected; — and will add to the other troubles I have had
of late — there was an account brought here from House de
