Dear Sam
Your last which informed me of the advantagious appointment
your Friend Mr Davis had obtained, & in ye most agreable
manner, gave us great pleasure, as we are truly sensible of his
merit — which is much more flattering from the Prospects
it opens to him, than the immediate benefit likely
to result from it — I am sensible your regard for him
is such that you cou'd not receive more satisfaction
from any Event how favourable so ever to yourself —
I have no doubt but Lord How, in case he succeeds,
and I think he can't well miscarry considering the
mighty forces he will have under his command,
will in a very few years be at the head of the —
Admiralty — and the attention he has shewn to real
merit, by the Choices he has already made cannot
fail of being an Incitement to others — I am sorry
to hear so indifferent an account of your health —
w<hi rend="underline">ch</hi> I hope is more owing to the late bad weather
than to any other Cause - for my own part I have not
been well myself these Six weeks, Colds have succeeded
Colds in a variety of Shapes — and lately I am convinced
I have had & still have a Gouty Disorder flying about
me - for my Stomach has hasthe same kind of Heat,
and the Smaller Ankles of my Legs the same kind
of Cold, this not altogether to ye degree, that I had
at Caën - Sunday se'en night Mr Desannes the Father
as well as the Son, dined with us, they had not been
in London above two or three days, and the father told
me he made the best Enquiry he cou'd after you
at Rochester, in passing through from Dover - but his stay
was not long enough to admit of seeing you - He seems
to be wonderfully pleas'd with London, & whatever places
besides he has seen - in his way to it as you tell me you
