My dear Sam
your Brother did not acquaint me with the Letter he
rece'd from you till the Day after I wrote to you; otherwise I shod
have been satisfied till I had yours — I commend your
determination to be capable of boasting to Pownell of your
assiduity, & it is the furthest from my wish if you shod do
otherwise - but I cod not help wishing, you had been
particular in letting me know what kind of work it was
yl you attend so closely to, whether you work with any xox
Tools," & for how long & what part of the Day - I have no
doubt but it is the mere Ostensibility of your working yl Pownell
lays the Stress on - & yet it is neither your actual Improvement,
nor the real Service to ye public or, as it is called
the King's, that he has at heart - as to the latter of the
Two, therefore, you may perhaps be agreed. I cannot help
thinking it however of very considerable consequence to you,
that you shod have some actual Grounds to go upon, to
be considered as a Shipwright — & therefore you cannot do
better to make sure to yourself those Grounds, now you
have it in your power, which will never be the Case, shod
you neglect the present opportunity, more especially as it
will be of so short duration To Day, is my Birth Day,
according to the New Stile, when, it has pleas'd God, I have
compleated the Sixty fourth year of my Age - and now I am
so far advanced, if it shall please him to continue to me
old Age: nothing would conduce so much to my comfort &
happiness, as to see your Brother & you in a situation to
maintain yourselves in a manner beyond my abilities
to support you. and must confess, the apprehension yl
you are not & may not be so, is the only consideration
in this Life that gives me any concern. as to yourself it
