I write at you, if I may say so, at a
venture, having reason to think that this will hardly reach
you when it arrives in London. It is now some time
since Sam wrote to you, as I understand, on a subject
which would have required an answer if you had
been in the way to give him one. We both conclude
therefore that you are still somewhere upon the ramble.
He is now here, and as he proposes to press through
London in order to take your commands in his way to
Portsmouth, I believe I will committ this paper to his
charge.
I am to thank you the favour of your's which I received
a few weeks ago. I have it not now at hand, but I
think it did not require any thing very particular from
me by way of answer. Thank you for the anecdote about
the Fragment. The commendation bestowd upon it
was render'd more pleasing to me by coming through your
hands than if it had come directly to my ears; as one of the
most valuable effects I can hope for from the public favour is
