The highest Place I could possibly think myself entitled to hope for
is that of Master Caulker. There is a Master Caulker to every
to Dock Yard except Sheerness: at that Yard the Assistant to
the Master Shipwright does the duty.
The Salary of the Master Caulkers at every one of the Dock Yards
except Woolwich is 100 £ a year at Woolwich it is 80 £ and there
is no house either at Woolwich or Deptford. At every Yard
the Master Caulker has 3 Apprentices. The Wages of an Apprentice
may amount to about 20 £ a year.
I do not know of any person's having risen from the condition
of a common man to the place of Master Caulker at one step;
therefore I can have very little hope of any one of those places.
The Places next below that of a Master Caulker's are those of Master
Boatbuilder & Master Mastmaker: these are the only ones inferior
to that of Master Caulker that are filled by Warrants from the
Admiralty Board. These in point of profit are equal: the Pay is
3 Shillings pr day and 2 Apprentices. There have been several
instances of common men being appointed to these places. The
present Master Mastmaker at Chatham is an example.
Any Vacancy in a superior place would probably by promotion make
Vacancies in these. In case of any such vacancy, the place I have
heard mentioned as being most likely at present to be vacant by
